Vintage Rock T's: A Dilemma

Let's get one thing straight, I am a firm believer that a good vintage rock t is a staple for any wardrobe. There are several reasons I think any gal (who is a music lover) should have one in black, white and grey.
1. Super soft
2. Super sexy... particularly with no pants (duh).
3. You're wearing a piece of music history (this shirt went ON TOUR with Genesis).
4. They look good with just about anything: Skinny jeans, shorts, cigarette pants, maxis, minis...they
are basically like your favorite plain t that goes with everything, except favorite-er.......
and more rock n' roll........er. And not many other people have the same one as you.

So that aside, can we discuss the rock t dilemma? The one where people are driving up the prices of these things so astronomically high they are becoming bougie? Yeah, that dilemma. I consider myself to be somewhat of an enthusiast, as me and J have amassed quite a few over the years.

So really, Jonathan found this original Genesis '87 tour t-shirt for $35, and other Genesis shirts are selling for $200 on ebay!?!?!? Pssssshhhhhhhaaa! I mean, I'm not saying that a good band t isn't a good investment, but I saw a Clash shirt on sale for $900 the other day. If you're wondering why I'm putting those numbers in caps, it's because I'm screaming and shaking my fist. Come on guyzzz. That is RENT for some people. Some sucker is going to buy your $250 Chicago shirt and people are gonna start thinking that's the going rate! Go suck an egg!

The question is what is the difference between a good band t and memorabilia? The Clash, for example, are rock legends. I personally put them in the same category as The Ramones or The Rolling Stones, and their shirts fall more on the memorabilia side (Genesis, not so much although I still love them). I understand why a concert tour shirt from one of these bands would be expensive. But not $900 expensive. Not yet anyway. And honestly I feel like it's not the "memorabilia" part that is driving up the price. It's the "fashion" part. The "I saw Erin Wasson in a Aerosmith t-shirt, I must get one" part. I'm just not sure how comfortable I am with rock t's becoming status symbols simply because they are trendy right now. That seems to be the path we're going down.

And for the love of Elvis, don't wear an Elvis shirt if you don't listen to Elvis.

Now that my pretentious music rant is over...I'm still lovin' the shinanigans out of some pleats, y'all!! And also my giant, cheesy, costume jewelry moon and star earrings. Don't be jelly.

  1. Completely jelly of your earrings. ALSO...OMG! Cannot believe the price of vintage tee's these days. I started stocking up! It's my form of investing in precious commodities ;) You look so fabulous...THOSE SHOES! THAT HAT! YOUR BOD! OMG story for you! I was at a pile sale the other day and some stupid teeny bopper was there annoying the shit out of me and what do you know...she pulls an ELVIS tee outta the pile! And she takes it home and I'm like...bitch you don't even know. It was cray and I feel like only you would understand how painful it was to watch...

PS- No clue who Genesis is.

    Love ya mama,

  5. Haha.. this is great.. I'd have to say... spending more than $30 bucks on a Tshirt that is older than dirt is hard for me.. I appreciate a good vintage piece but then again... it's a tshirt... however if I was able to come across a legit Fleetwood Mac Tshirt that was an original... I might be tempted to spend more... but who wouldn't it's Fleetwood Mac!!! Love your Tshirt.. Love it all.. those shoes are killer..

  6. Photos are gorgeous as usual! Oh man, 250 for a t-shirt?!! I totally agree with the whole "if you don't listen to them... don't wear the shirt" hence why I have no rocker t's myself. Also, in love with the sandas :)

  8. Wow. Chica...you BLOW me away. Seriously. Epic outfit. You look sexy, swagger and chill all in one. How DO you always do it? Loved this post about rock t-shirts, and I couldn't agree more- $900 for a tee? GEEZ! No thanks, not even if was something I thought I couldn't live without! But then again, my equivalent to your rock tee is an awesome rocking shoe. I do want rock tees (by bands I LISTEN to), but can't find them, or like you're mentioning- they're SUPER expensive! ($150 & up) Any tips?! XOXO

  9. Ha! I'm wearing my band tee with red heels today. But with cutoffs and a mom blazer. :) And I'd love Genesis tee, but not $200 worth. Yeesh.

  10. I like the outfit you did really good pairing it with the shorts and heels. I had no idea the Ts were selling for so much. I understand the memorabilia part but wow so expensive. I also agree that you should only wear band shirts if you are a fan of the band. I see a lot of teens rock shirts and can't name one song of the person or band they're wearing.

  11. great shirt, and finding them in op shops (thrift shops)for cheap is gold, and buying them on ebay etc for more kinda sucks, but if the end result is a cool tee shirt, then there is no price on it! :D

  12. I'm totally agree with you, I don't really get this trend of wearing band tees that bands you probably don't like just because the tee is in. I would never wear a tee just for fashion if I don't listen to that, it's just logic..

I love how this kind of t-shirts look with all kind of skirts, at least is the way I wear them the most and how more comfy I feel.

  16. Ok. Annoying. You're so perfect.

    That aside.

Agree on this band tee "rant". When in London this summer, every single vintage rock-esque tee was upwards of 40 pounds...like...$100.

In a shitty thrift store. FERREALLZZZ????
Snatch up all the shitty NSync tees right now,
because you KNOW in 10 years dey gon' be hot

    Those earrings?? Where?

  17. that genesis tee is all kinds of amazing. there's only one rock tee i've ever felt had a justified astronomical price and it's a john and yoko tee that i ogle every time i go to my neighborhood vintage boutique. i swear to make it mine when i finally make my millions!

  18. A big dilemma is that these concert t-shirts are really only accessible online (unless you get insanely lucky at Goodwill) and you can't tell if the shirt is that comfy perfect vintage material or the stiff cotton that can almost stand up on its own and makes you look like you're about to go on a jog and just wearing a shirt you don't care about. Wasteland's selection of concert tees? $150 is on the low side!

Genesis is the one with Phil Collins, right?

    1. I know, it is frustrating, Lindsey. I've found a few reasonable ones at Wasteland, but sometimes they are just asinine. I do have pretty damn good luck a Buffalo Exchange though. That's where this Genesis shirt is from. (And yeah, it's the band with Phil Collins)
      Thanks for your input!!

  19. I really love the classic band T's, $900 for one is ridiculous though. Sad thing is that they sell new t-shirts for like 50-75€ at festivals nowadays. Always makes me pull a sad face and turn around at those booths. I really need a band T in my life! Loving your travel-shorts too, they always make me think of adventurers. Love the whole look <3
