Originally my little brother's 'every day' kicks, they became worn out and morphed into his lawn mowing shoes...the white rubber is stained green. He wears a bigger size than me, so they resemble clown shoes ever so slightly (I like to keep my footwear floppaaaaay). They have holes, the laces are busted and I wouldn't want it any other way. Now that I think about it they are probably my favorite piece in my entire closet.
People pay good money to sport sartorial selections as perfectly destructed as these Chuck Taylors.
I grew close to my little brother in our high school years. We explored the suburban teenage pop-punk, angsty, drinking beer in woods, converse wearing, hot pink and green hair dying horizons together, and he did it all while wearing these shoes. I'm afraid when they become completely unwearable I might have to bronze them.
Funny how nostalgia can take something representative of such an uncomfortable time in life
(teenage-dom) and transform it into...well...ultimate comfort. On days when "I just need to do me, y'all" (i.e. no makeup, jeans, and a non discript shirt) these hightops are a go-to.
So here's I am. No make-up (not trying to make a statement or anything, unless the statement is "I'm lazy"), jeans, nappy hair and my favorite shoes.
What's the story with the sentimental pieces in your closets? I wanna know about 'em.

It's funny when things like shoes can hold such value for us. At the moment, I can't think of anything in my closet that holds such value for me and reminds me of another time. There are definitely pieces that make me feel like me though. Whenever I put a blazer on, it always makes me feel like myself. I don't know if it's a sentimental thing though. I just love blazers :D

Mine is a pair of Converse slides I've had since high school. They were the first "cool" pair of shoes I ever owned. I don't wear them because frankly they're pretty ugly, but I've never been able to get rid of them.
ReplyDeleteI love when clothes have such an emotional connection to them - that is what makes them truly special. I have a 90's sweatshirt with flowers on them and a big old rhinestone in the middle that was my grandma's - it is becoming pretty ratty, but I know that I will keep it until it literally falls off of my body - those are clothes that you can't buy in any store.

Love this post...and I really love the whole look! BTW, you look fab w/out make-up! I have a really old pair of boots I love to wear...they are so worn out...and they need to be resoled, yet something has prevented me from doing so. I have many other pieces like this in my wardrobe. Another fav of mine has become a worn out white-tee of my hubby's. Classic stuff man. XOXO!

This is a great story! I have a pair of chucks that are getting nearly as destroyed and i always get comments about how perfectly destroyed they are, it's so funny!
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of Rainbow Sandals, a staple for most in Southern California. I wear them practically everyday (even in the rain) and lets just say I should probably spend the money for a new pair cause they are falling apart. But thats what I like about them - they are perfect!

You look freaking awesome without makeup, girl. I have a jacket that's not old, but it holds a lot of meaning since it was my mom's last birthday gift to me. It's almost like a gift from the grave because I got it in the aftermath of her death. I love this post, and you look awesome as always!

there is nothing at all in the world quite like a pair of worn in chucks. the best footwear there is. you look amazing makeup free and if my hair would look like your nappy hair on its good days i'd be on to something. and that necklace is beautiful.

I have a pair of baggy pants (and I mean really baggy:)) I'm never getting rid off. I used to listen to hip hop when I was in high school and I wore them to an Eminem, Xzibit, G-Unit and Cypress Hill concert in Amsterdam and I'm NEVER throwing them out. EVER.:)
ReplyDeleteMy other half threw away my chucks :(

I own a pair of skulled Don Ed Hardy kicks that have seen many countries (Mexico, Puerto Rico & Canada) over the years and even though they may no longer be "trendy" they are still my fave and I ❤ them. Just got my 1st pair of flatform Converse high tops!! ❤ them too!!
