No Good at Goodbyes: The Sentiment Behind Cleaning Out Our Closets.

We are moving. I feel like that is all I have to say to instigate moans and groans from any person I'm speaking too. Yes. It's a huge pain in the ass, but there's always a silver lining. This time I'm focusing on how desperately I need to shed some preverbal skin when it comes to my wardrobe. This used to be a huge issue for me, as I apparently had some OCD/hoarder tendencies.

"That rumpled up shirt has been hanging on the back of my desk chair for 6 months, and I've been having really good luck lately, so just don't fuck with it...okeeeeey?"

It might have not been that bad, but my closet was full of shirts with holes, dresses with stains that maybe I could hide with a another layer. Not to mention if a garment is not damaged at all, but just hasn't been worn in 3 years. I'm learning to get past it though.

Selling vintage has helped. It's thrilling to know that something you've provided to someone else is getting love. Something that was just sadly hanging around in a thrift store or in the back of a closet ... feeling lonely...worthless...all potential talent going to waste.

Okay so besides being OCD, I apparently give inanimate objects emotions.

So now as I comb through every single piece of clothing I own, I ask myself if someone could put it to better use. If so, to Buffalo Exchange or to the Etsy store it goes. If it's damaged, well then it's only fair to make room for another piece. Give someone .... errrr .... something SOMETHING else a chance.

This dress is slightly too big, and although I LOVE the off-beat color and the low-v back ... I've got to sell it, so you can grab it at our Etsy store if you love it too!

  1. I'm going through the same thing right now! I just moved back in to my parents house before I make the big move down to LA, and my mom was like "you know, you should maaayyyybe think about selling some of your clothes..." and I said "but I need every single one of these six different pairs of black skinny jeans because they all serve a different purpose!" It's definitely tough letting go of some pieces, but at the same time it feels really good to refresh your closet!

  5. Why are you guys moving??
I'm so nosy. Want to know more!

Hope it goes fantabulously - but moving DOES suck. I'm glad you're learning to part with your sartorial obsessions. Please teach me.

    Please.

    My place is OVERFLOWING.

I'm sort of drooling a lot when I look at these pictures. This blue is OUTSTANDING on you. And the back.

  6. This is a dress I never would have dreamed of trying but looks absolutely magical on! Go you!

Good luck with moving; its hard (I suddenly took on that sort of attitude of needing to cull my closet when I moved this summer too).

  7. Dude. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I just can't give up clothes sometimes because I'm so worried about how they are treated? It sounds crazy and people probably say that I need help...or a man... or both, but I love my clothes. They all have a story. An adventure behind them. Why give that up? but, alas, sometimes it is necessary. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Also, that dress is gorgeous! So tempting!

  9. You must have the most amazing collection of clothes in your wardrobe, I’m not surprised it’s hard to let go of some of them! I’m someone who attaches emotions to inanimate objects far too easily and it really does make getting rid of things so difficult. Selling your things on to someone who will love them just as much as you helps, but sometimes I just can’t bring myself to get rid of something…I end up keeping the fabric in the hops that I’ll turn it into something awesome sometime. Thanks for visiting my blog, I love yours :) Good luck with the packing! x

  10. Whyyy the hell are you selling this dress? It looks phenomenal on you!
I'm the same with my clothes. There's so much crap I don't wear but I can't say goodbye, it's too painful, sniff :-D

  11. That dress is absolutely gorgeous! I love the colour and material, looks very good on you! Don't get rid of it! ;)

I'm the exact opposite, I throw away/give away/sell things too easily and then I start to miss things that I got rid off. And then I have to buy new things and it starts all over again ;)

This is so stunning - I love the lacey dress a lot! Too bad you can't keep it though.
I've moved several times in the past and always liked the feeling of having to be forced to declutter....

    Have a wonderful day,

  15. Haha, I laughed when I read this. IT'S TOTALLY ME. I hate donating or selling things because I sometimes have a spur of the moment idea and wear something I haven't in forever in a chic new outfit!

These photos are so erethral. I love that lacy dress and the lighting in the photos goes perfectly with it. Ahh, everything is seriously perfect! The flowery background, your hair, earrings, shoes. I'm swooning over this gorgeous ensemble.

Stay lovely and good luck moving!

  17. I totally understand your pain with moving and cleaning out closets- I'm in the same boat, as I'll be lugging all of my belongings in a U-Haul in two weeks to move to New York! Getting rid of old clothes with memories is hard, but it's nice to have a new wardrobe beginning and start fresh in a different place! Good luck to you, love!

  19. this dress is gorgeous, i love how the lace extends past the lining at the bottom. i just had a similar freak out at my closet and made myself get rid of anything that was ripped, stained, didn't fit, i had never gotten around to altering after 2 years of ownership, etc. it was a daunting task but now i get to fill all those holes in my closet. probably with things from yours!

  21. Such an amazing dress! Shame it's a bit too big, hopefully someone else will be able to love it as well ;)
And I tend to do the same with my objects, most especially childhood toys, my mom keeps nagging me that I have stuff in boxes she wants to give away but I just can't bear it to seperate myself from those things. Clothes has become easier: everything overworn, dirty, stretched whatever gets recycled at the H&M store (they take in anything and give a cool coupon). Anything else I try to sell at closet sales :) Good luck with the move!
