A Fishing Town with a Drinking Problem

I'm pretty sure the tourist department of St. Augustine Florida needs to give me at least a couple thousand doallars. For real, I'm singing that tiny town's praises every chance I get. Proof here, here and here. What's not to love? Being the oldest city in the U.S. located near what happens to be one of the most beautiful beaches, it has everything.
Inner coastal salt water river with oyster beds, manatees, dolphins, and all together adorable "drinking town with a fishing problem" charm? Yes. Gorgeous Spanish architecture ? Si Señor! Historical (haunted? see orbs in photograph below..spooooooooky) downtown with one of the oldest cemeteries in the nation AND a haunted lighthouse? Ehhhh I'm not too into being scared shitless, but if you are...this is your place. Ponce de Leon's supposed Fountain of Youth? Who doesn't need one of those?

Pirate history! Sea turtles! Gorgeous Spanish Moss! HUGE thunderstorms!

And finally the most beautiful un-commercialized beach. That's right. No high rises, no Señor Frogs, no ass wangs trying to sell you stupid Rastafarian-style hats.

Everyday a tidal pool forms when the tide goes out. It can get about 3 feet deep or so, and becomes this sort of wading lagoon for people who aren't necessarily wanting to deal with the Atlantic waves. I did lots of wading there. And I didn't want to come home.

  1. Love your pictures! I've never been to St Augustine but I have been to other parts of FL and love the state! The beaches are amazing, though the humidity is a bit high :) Glad you had a great time!

  8. These photo's are so amazing! Love the vacation-relaxed feel to them :) tidal pools are so cool! At the beach I always go too, we have them as well. Although the rest of the town isn't as pretty (just google Belgian coast, it's a HORROR, the ugly big buildings in front of the pier). I really like the pretty sights of this town!

  9. A fishing town with a drinking problem, sounds where I grew up in Holland, it has the same kind of beach too. No wild animals, that's a shame. Anyway they should hire you to officially promote their town, these shots are dreamy, cool and certainly attract! Love the cute doggies, the more dogs the better!

  10. My husband and I have been toying with the idea of the Floridian lifestyle, much like yourselves…..throwing-away the damp and darkness of Scotland (and for me returning to my home country) and living simply in a ranch style house in a more hospitable climate. Playing outdoor tennis year-round. SIGH. I have been campaigning pretty hard for this, and your photos have just added fodder to my cannon, so to speak, so thanks for that. :)

  14. I agree, the tourist department needs to commission you as their official endorser. I seriously cannot even believe that this place exists in America? Reminds me of a European city, and Spanish architecture is my absolute favorite. I'm planning on visiting Orlando sometime this year (DISNEYWORLD, YAY!) and I think I'm going to add this to the list :)

  15. ok, i'm sold. somehow i just this moment realized what an oaf i am for living 3 hours away and having NEVER been.. i guess because it's so close vacationing there seemed anticlimactic. and i mean, i live 20 minutes from some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. but now, after all this talk of architecture, ancient cemeteries and ghosts galore, i'm really starting to see the error of my ways. i mean, i think i gotta get down there for a long weekend STAT. st augustine, give this lady an all expense paid vacation or somethin, dang!
